How to improve your resume / CV?

Resume / CV is must for every job application. It’s not advisable to copy the resume / CV from friends / colleagues or from other sources. And without much changes, it’s shared to the company. However one can copy format from other resumes / CV for sure by filling own’s details.

Remember resume is just like your ambassador (i.e. representative) representing you in the company. So if it is not giving clear picture, you are going to lose the chance even if you are most eligible for the role.

In company Recruiter reviews that resume & takes necessary steps.

He/She will pass it to next level / reject instantly or keep it on hold for future review. Here “on hold” means, your profile can neither be rejected nor be selected for next round.

Beware of ATS:

Many big firms where there are lots of resumes / CV landing to their email ids, use Application Tracking System (ATS).

What ATS does? Let’s understand it in brief. It is a system / software that follows a set of rule and rejects the not matching resumes. It saves lots of time of HR. But there are some issues attached with use of ATS.

ATS has some limitations mainly reading out words mentioned in the image or understanding images so.

You can avoid to keep images in the resume.

So it’s highly recommended that even if you want to keep some images then please don’t mention any important details in the image. ATS might not be able to interpret sentences / words in image so you are going to miss the opportunity.

ATS has many advantages however the above is of the most important drawbacks of ATS.

So sometimes potential candidates who hasn’t followed the right method of job application, are rejected in the screening round itself due to ATS.

Always look at perspective of the recruiter / company too while applying. So think about what recruiter / HR / Talent acquisition manager wants to see in candidate for that particular opening?

Points to keep in mind while improving resume / CV:

=> Firstly, keep contact details updated & mention it on the top of the resume.

=> If you wish to keep – Career Goal / Career Objective, you can keep it but not more than 2 lines. Best would be keep it short, clear and with 1 line.

This will improve your resume & you will be far way better than others if they are not following it.

Secondly, keep experience details just after it.

Remember, there are mainly 11-12 points, everybody must focus & mention in the experience section as below:

  • Company name
  • Company location
  • Designation [Actual designation as per given by the company]
  • Roles & Responsibilities [Overall Roles & Responsibilities – can be brief (or even skipped) too if you are mentioning Roles & Responsibilities in every project in detail]
  • Joining month with year / date & Relieving month with year / date (for past companies)
  • Joining month with year / date & mention Till date / Continue (for current company)
  • Name of Projects [E.g. if you have worked in any website / mobile application which is live and publicly available then please do mention for sure which part of the project you have handled so recruiter / human resource manager gets an idea what you did in that project]
  • Project Brief
  • Project Duration (start month & year with end month & year)
  • Team Size
  • Roles & Responsibilities in the project [That’s project based Roles & Responsibilities]
  • Skills used [Mention all the technical / non technical skills used by you during the project]

The above are most important things while you mention your experience part in the resume and if you keep it at the top most place just after “Career Goal / Career Objective”, you will definitely have higher chance for the response from the recruiter / company if you mention it by working out below point.

While mentioning your skills, Job Roles and Responsibilities, total experience – please keep below things in mind:

-Read complete Job Description from start till end without missing a single word / line

-Keep mark of main requirements / must requirements / main keywords

-You have that sort of experience but you haven’t mentioned in your existing resume. So when you read the Job Description, you recall it & mention it as you already have those skills & experience. So please add those skills / experience in the resume and bold it. Keep it on upper side while mentioning.

– Please bold / highlight skills / experience / total experience which is exactly matching to the JD and already available in your CV / Resume. Just make sure to keep it on top side while mentioning.

You must have this dilemma- Where to keep latest experience & the past experience in order?

  • Keep latest experience first and then go on to go ahead & reach chronologically to the first job / internship you have done in your career. Remember – most of the companies / recruiters / talent executive managers / recruitment consultancies are looking forward to see your latest experience first & based on that experience and role, they decide most of the time whether to invite you for the further round or not. As that’s the role you are currently working on so it’s well likely you are more interested into that kind of role and will consider those opportunities.
  • Recruiter / Company / HR generally wants to see those keywords while reviewing the resume / CV. Generally Recruiter / HR are getting number of resumes so you have few seconds to impress the recruiter. And if you don’t mention such keywords / skills set in the top side or not in first page anywhere – it’s more likely that you may miss the opportunity.
  • When companies use ATS that does the same with no. of other set rules which are asked to follow by it. Mainly it also search the keywords based on what it is asked for & if it doesn’t get it in your CV / Resume, it’s going to be rejected by system itself.

=> So the thumb rule is – align your CV / Resume & interest [If you have particular exp., skills and interest] with JD (Job Description) of the company. This will give you high chance to clear the initial screening process by any company & you will get more quick and positive response from the recruiter / Human Resource Executive / Talent acquisition manager / Recruitment Consultancy / Hiring manager of the company for appearing for the interview.

In the upcoming blogs, I will explain you each of the above points in detail too.

Many experienced professionals work on different projects and due to rush in “work and life“, forget to remember after some number of months and years about their past work and sometimes hard to remember and mention.

So to sort out that please keep a regular practice of noting down of your professional work / achievements with every project you do so when you are about to write in the CV / Resume, you won’t have to give much load to your brain. The more fresh it’s to memory, the more good way you can write it down.

And third & golden suggestion which I suggest to every job sleeker – Keep resume in either using Microsoft word file type or PDF file type.

If you ask me, I would highly recommend you to please keep it in PDF always.

I have explained its detailed reason along with above all points in my YouTube video too.
